Mujeres del Río y el Viento le da una voz y presencia a mujeres que históricamente han sido invisibles en nuestra sociedad. La invisibilidad de estas mujeres atraviesa las líneas de las clases sociales, raciales y de geografía convirtiendo esta realidad en una realidad universal para muchas mujeres en nuestra sociedad global y es inevitable para muchas. Al exponer la invisibilidad de Mujeres del Río y el Viento intento también exponer la de otras mujeres.
Mujeres del Río y el Viento une dos proyectos independientes en los que incorporo retratos fotográficos y entrevistas de historia oral con las mujeres. Las Mujeres de la Tierra del Sol cuenta las historias de vida de mujeres hispanas nuevo mexicanas y Con el Corazón Partido narra las historias de mujeres inmigrantes mexicanas que viven en Nuevo México.
Esta obra da reconocimiento a las contribuciones que estas mujeres han dado al construir nuestra cultura, educar las nuevas generaciones y apoyar el desarrollo de su propia gente. Nacidas y criadas en ambos lados de frontera México/Estados Unidos ellas comparten raíces similares, pero sin embargo viven separadas por esa línea arbitraria que es la frontera y que nos divide y erosiona. La diferencia entre estos dos grupos de mujeres esta definida en parte por donde nacieron, en que lado de la "línea".
Women of the River and the Wind gives a voice and presence to women who historically have been invisible in our society. Women’s invisibility crosses culture, race, class and geographic boundaries making this a reality that is universal in our global society and inevitable for most. By exposing the invisibility of the women in Women of the River and the Wind, I expose that of other women.
Women of the River and the Wind unites two separate photographic portraits and oral history projects: Women from the Land of the Sun telling the life stories Hispanic New Mexican women and With a Split Heart telling the life stories of Mexican immigrant women living in New Mexico.
This body of work recognizes Hispanic New Mexican and Mexican immigrant women’s role in building our cultural fabric, educating the future generations and supporting our growth as peoples. Born and raised on both sides of the US/Mexico border, they share similar origins yet are separated by that arbitrary line that creates a profound and eroding division. The difference between them is, in part, defined by where they were born, on which side of the line, "la línea".
