Crecí en una época en la que todos éramos "norteamericanos." No podías hablar Español en la casa porque no lo permitían en la escuela. Ellos (mis padres) querían tener este orgullo de que todos fuéramos "norteamericanos." El sistema te empujaba a que te convirtieras en eso (un norteamericano) y a que te volvieras capitalista. Tratando de lograr aquel "sueño norteamericano," llegó hasta el punto en que ellos (mis padres) negaban su herencia cultural, aquello a lo que pertenecían culturalmente. Ellos no reconocían eso. Mi padre siempre decía: "somos puro Español," pero aún así, si mirabas a mi madre, ella parecía pertenecer al pueblo de Taos. Fue un tiempo de gran confusión para nosotros. En realidad no sabíamos cuáles eran nuestras raíces. Sabíamos que habían ciertas comidas, que actuábamos de una determinada manera, y que teníamos ciertas tradiciones, pero en realidad no entendíamos. Pensábamos que así era la vida y que la vida de cada uno era de esa manera (igual a la nuestra). Mas tarde descubrí que no lo era.
I grew up in a time when we were all "Americans." You couldn"t speak Spanish in the house because they didn't allow it in the school. They (my parents) wanted to have this pride that we were all "American." The system was pushing you to become that (an American) and to become capitalistic. Trying to achieve that "American Dream," it got to the point where they (my parents) were negating their cultural inheritance, what they culturally belonged to. They didn't acknowledge (their cultural roots). My father would always say: "somos puro Español" and yet you looked at my mother and she looked like she belonged in Taos Pueblo. It was a real confusing time for us. We didn't really know what our roots were. We knew we had certain foods, and we acted in a certain way, and we had certain traditions, but we really didn't understand. We thought it was just life and everyone's life was that way (like ours). I found out later that it wasn't.
