Mis padres sufrieron mucho creciendo aquí y cuando asistían a la escuela. Yo creo que quizás es por eso que yo tuve gran deseo de ser maestra de educación bilingüe y así poder mejorar mi idioma. Pero mis padres sufrieron mucho, usted sabe, a ellos les pegaban en la escuela si hablaban Español. Por ser pobres sufrieron mucho, y nunca nos enseñaron a hablar Español. Usted sabe, el que yo pueda hablar Español representa para mí el esfuerzo de mi padre y mi madre al mandarme al extranjero a aprender Español, como estudiante de intercambio a Yucatán y a España. Así es como aprendí a hablar el Español; no en mi casa.
M y parents suffered so much growing up here, going to school. I think maybe that is why I was so inclined to become a bilingual teacher and really work on my language. But my parents suffered so much, you know they would hit them if they spoke Spanish in school. Because they were poor they suffered and they never taught us Spanish. You know my language is a combination of a great deal of effort on the part of my dad and my mom to send me to study as a foreign exchange student in Yucatán and in Spain. That's how I learned Spanish, not at home.
